The starter motor on my 95 Fiat Punto went last night. I was wondering if anyone knew the likely cost of a replacement, plus how much it would cost in labour?? Sorry, I haven't got the foggiest when it comes to cars. My clutch also felt like it was 'clicking' as my foot was half-way to the floor....it's never done this before...is this likely to be the clutch going too?? If so, how much would this cost to sort out as well..??? Thanks very much in advance.

it depends where you take it
how much have you been quoted?

you need to be carefull with old cars, if you do need a clutch and starter motor you can sometimes end up spending more then the car is worth.
old cars arent ecconomical for people who dont do their own repairs

Tell me about it....last year, varying problems from new brake discs / pads (only a year after getting them replaced), then something to do woth the radiator (90), head gasket (ouch!), MOT also required one or two things (another 100-odd worth), then this year the starter motor and possibly even the clutch - methinks it's time to look for another car - what do you think??

not even had quotes yet...
A reconditioned starter motor should be around 40 to 45 pound and available from any motor factor. I have replaced loads of these and it is a relitavely easy job, any more than 1 hours labour and they're yanking your chain!
Clutch is an unusual complaint, i think on this model it is hydraulic so can't be a frayed cable. Clutches are an achillees heel on Punto's with the release bearing wearing through the cover but the first complaint is usually difficult gear selection. You would need to get it looked out. Worse case scenario if a clutch is required would be 3.5 hours labour (Fiat recommended repair time, although they can be done is about 1 hour) and 50-55 pounds for a clutch.
old car repair cost versus new car depreciation. The ultimate problem to solve.
With cars depreciating so fast, it is in my opinion , time to ditch old motors and get a better replacement- but be sure that is new enough not to need work.
Otherwise get a set of tools and get stuck in. Starters dead easy- clutch not so easy at all. But at a reasonable garage around 140ish
