The earliest recorded use of the word in a sexual sense was in the early 1700s. In the sense of being cheated, it started life as a piece of American slang a little over a century ago.
Both concepts come from the idea of something being 'driven' by pressure of one kind or another! In references even earlier than the 1700s, one aspect of the verb 'screw' was the use of the thumbscrew to obtain information.
