Hi I bought a fish tank the other day for my gold fish it has a pump etc but what I was wondering is how often do I need to clean out the tank itself ? do I need to take the filter out and clean that ? Oh and are you meant to turn the pump off at the end of the day ?

I hope someone can help.......

Hiya

I have a tropical tank, but I presume they run the same basic way.........

1- i do a 20/30% water change once a week.

2- filter can be cleaned by washing it in the water you've removed from the tank, never ever wash it in water direct from the tap (chlorined water) it will destroy the bacteria buildup your fish need.

3- no, never turn yur pump off.

Great, thank you for your info.
I have had a few tropical tanks over the years and had an undergravel tray type filter, I would change about 75% of the water when I cleaned tha tank out about once a year and it always stayed crystal clear.

If your water gets cloudy to soon, it is usually caused by overfeeding
