I am going to Edinburgh for a weekend with my Stepmum, no car only our feet and public transport.

which part would you recommend old or new, princes st or royal mile.

I haven't been there since I was a child so not entirely sure of where to stay.

We were in Edinburgh for the Tattoo last year and found it had changed a lot since we were last there a number of years ago..and not for the better.

I think once Jenners went, Princes Street lost its heart. I'm sure there's still a lot of interesting and nice places to see, we just didn't have the time.

The left hand side of Princes Street is awful - it's far better to go down into the gardens on the right-hand side and walk the length of the street that way!

People who like shopping think the new St James Quarter is wonderful. There are three floors of shops and dozens of restaurants. It's useful on a rainy day (not uncommon in the capital!)

Better put the Johnnie Walker experience last on your itinerary, Red!  After paying the price and three cocktails, you might just want to return to your hotel!

Sorry, the 'left hand side' is for those coming in from my side of town, from the west end etc!

I know nothing about Edinburgh's shops, but I've found when visiting Cities in the UK now, so many "shopping Quarters" are identical, so I stick to other attractions which tend to be unique.

lol Haz I had thought we would do it that way!
I know it's going to be expensive but it's a treat for my Stepmum

RH, five minutes walk from Johnny Walker takes you to a great pub at the bottom of Lothian Road. It's 'only' a Wetherspoons, but the building is great -  the 'Caley'  has been converted from an old cinema and it is quite impressive (and pretty roomy, not true of many of the places on the Royal Mile itself).

Thanks neveracrossword, but I don't'do' weatherspoons

This is my favourite pub in Edinburgh - just off the Waverley end of Princes Street

Edinburgh, in terms of public transport, is very much a bus city. Here's where they go

and here's how much it costs

RH, thanks- I do Wetherspoons only when I'm stuck (or when I'm with my less fussy friends!) I agree with the Cafe Royal venue, it's stunning.

Question Author

Cafe royal will be added thanks all, trip not till April but flights are booked. Stepmum and I are really looking forward to it

Not forgetting afternoon tea at the Dome, George Street or Harvey Nichols up near St. Andrew's Square Bus station. 🤤

... the Walforf Astoria (across from Johnny Walker) rates really highly for afternoon tea.

Hmmmm will we be sober enough though

Can't help with your question, but I'd highly recommend this restaurant. https://www.whiskirooms.co.uk/

It's a while ago that we ate there, but it was devine.

The Royal Yacht Britannia is a fascinating visit if you can get there by public transport. That, the castle and the Palace of Holyrood House were our favourite visits.

RH, the royal yacht tour is definitely worth doing - and the buses and trams go right down to Ocean Terminal (where Britannia is).
