Only she knows why she would do it. Perhaps they can examine the psychology of it during the time she is rightfully incarcerated.

She should be sent to jail but eight-and-a-half years seem a bit steep.

I remember two recent cases were the perps were not sent to prison for rape. One got off because of his age and the other didn't know it was wrong to rape.

She very obviously has mental health issues. Locking her up will achieve nothing to address her fundamental mental condition. Neither will it treat the root cause of her unfortunate problems.
