New here and would be grateful to anyone who can help me parse these two clues from puzzle No. 19 in The Telegraph's "Big Book of Cryptic Crosswords 2":

"One way to smash ball in gap (8)" - DISTANCE

"Sit back to run city policy (7)" - RECLINE

Distance - 'i (one) st(reet; way)' (to smash; go in) 'dance' (ball)

Recline - 'r(un) EC (City [of London]) line (policy)'

St street/ way in dance ( bAll)

1 I (one) st (way) inside dance (ball)

Thank you all very much - for the explanations and the welcome. Ah... yes... I stupidly got hung up on TAN (as in "beat") for "smash" and just never thought of the postcode for "city". I will next time!
