Indeed Zacs, what is often not appreciated was that at the time the UK was also fighting the short French bloke so could not give the US war of independence our full attention.

Fun Fact, the white became so named because they hastily white washed over the burnt exterior shortly after.

Ireland pulled the same stunt a century later when we were mostly tied up in the small matter of TGW.
It was known as the White House before the British set it on fire.
