Is it feasable, or even legal to disconnect an old gas cooker and reconnect the new one yourself? I understand the safety aspects of the job of course, but as far as I can see its just one pipe union to be undone and remade and the jobs done! Hardly worth the 50 or so I have been quoted for the job by a corgi approved gas fitter.

the reason why your guy is Corgi registered is because he knows what he is doing, and you can rest easy that the job is done properly. Don't mess with potentially lethal domestic supplies, it's not big or clever. Pay your 50, and stay safe.
Theres nothing stopping you changing over your cooker as you not doing it as a job where you're receiving payment. However unless you've got the "u" gauge and the leak detector spray to do the relevent tests will your insurance cover you if there was a "problem".So i would hand your money over to the money for old rope merchants, sorry i stand corrected qualified engineers.(Better not add fuel to the fire and mention rogue traders)
Sorry but, when I first read the main heading part of this question, I could've sworn it said "Can I Contact my own gas cooker" lol - I'll get me coat...
If you do this yourself, be aware that if you have a gas explosion, and survive(!) you may be sued by other for dammages.
Also bare in mind, I have a lot of experiance dealing with very flamable and xplosive materials. I wouldn't attempt to do this.
I've always understood it to be illegal to do it yourself - paid or not. Here is the relevent section of the Corgi web site

Also bear in mind that if you fit it yourself then you could well be invalidating your buildings/contents insurance.
I think that by law, it must be installed by a corgi fitter.
I had a British Gas fitter blank off the unwanted supply to my fireplace. He duly tested his work with a cigarette lighter, this was followed by a "Whuummmp" sort of sound a ball of flame and singed eyebrows. He then had another go at the job and all was well. A true pro, and a true story.
The old gas fitters trick for leak testing is usually to put some soap / washing up liquid bubbles on the joints.
