When I heard this I though great boost British goods, then I thought, hang on does that mean all their fruit and veg will be seasonal? Where will my Avocados come from? will I be able to get oranges figs and dates at Xmas.? I'm sticking with Aldi as I've shopped there for over 20 years, way before it was popular and their prices are consistently cheap.
Jack's might struggle to compete in the 'discounted' market.
For example Tesco sell their own brand baked beans for 32p. In their Jack's stores they'll be rebranded to the new name and sold for 29p. However both Asda and Lidl offer 'own brand' baked beans for 23p, so they're not undercutting the opposition.
Further, a 500g pack of turkey mince costs £4.00 in Tesco but just £3.35 in Jack's. However it's £3.29 in Asda and £3.15 in Lidl so, again, there's no saving to be made.

If you are a regular shopper in TESCO why would you go to Jack's? To save money? ok that means that Jacks will start to take business off TESCO as people will think they are getting the same produce just cheaper. Who would continue to shop in TESCO if jacks is providing basically the same products but at a cheaper price. Will they be closing some TESCO to open as Jacks or building new shops?
^^^ Tesco's plans, as announced so far, AuntLydia, are to open two Jack's stores in mothballed Tesco stores but to build purpose-built units elsewhere.
If people are offered the choice between Tesco and Jack's, they'll probably go to Jack's if they're only after the lowest prices on a limited range of goods but to Tesco if they want to be offered a far greater choice of food items, or if they want to use the restaurant, to buy clothes, to put fuel in their car, etc.
I've worked on transport surveys, monitoring the movements of cars going to and from supermarkets. A large number of people who shop in Lidl or Aldi then head straight to a 'full range' supermarket (such as Asda) to top up their shopping requirements with all of the items which they couldn't get from the discount retailer. So there might be plenty of people who start their shopping trip in Jack's but who then go on to Tesco.

I do nearly all my shopping in Aldi but I do have to pop into Sainsbury's on occasions to get certain ingredients they don't have in Aldi. My % spend though at Aldi v Sainsbury's would be about 85/15.
Aldi and lidl work because not only do they have reasonable prices they now have larger ranges and they do stock some luxury items at reasonable prices because they can import them from their German and Scandi stores.
I don't think Jack's will work because people will perceive it as a shop where Tesco sends all its rubbish, in fact that's the first thing my husband remarked on when we saw this the TV
