I would like to go a river cruise but dont want to go on escorted excursions every day in various cities we pass through. I dont mind getting off the ship and wandering about myself. These holidays usually add in the cost of the excursions so I dislike the though of paying for a service I dont want. Are there any companies that do cruises without excursions?

On the cruises I've been on, you pay extra for excursions. Theyre not included in the price.
You can get off and do your own thing.

river cruises mostly include the excursions, at least local ones, mainly because everyone else does. They're usually just walks (as the ships moor in the middle of town) so the actual cost of them wouldn't be high; no need to hire coaches.
Mr S and I have just come back from a river cruise, on the Rhine,
Fifth time we have been, a lot of the excursions are extra, but even the ones that are free are not compulsory,
You can leave the ship and do your own thing,
just check what time the ship leaves, and where it is going to be berthed next before you go off on your own.
Both Saga and Scenic don't include the price of excursions, which are generally paid for as an extra. IgluCruise has great last minute offers on river cruises (if you don't mind booking a week before your cruise departs): https://www.iglucruise.com/river-cruises
