For a long time now, I have noticed that most people in my local Co-op, where I buy my Guardian every morning, always take a copy of their newspaper of choice. not from the one on top of the pile, but one from maybe the 3-4 copy in. The top copy appears to be OK and not disturbed in any way.

I have asked a couple of people why they do it and they all said in case someone had been reading the top copy !

I have often seen a board husband flicking through a paper while the wifey shops, so I always pick one from further down lol x
sorry bored ^^

I always go for 3rd or 4th down because it's amazing how many people you see liking their fingers before picking up a paper, check it out.

Never thought of that !
I also always go for 3 or 4 down - they're usually less creased

Licking ^^^ not liking... Doh!!!!!
In the days when I bought papers I would often find that the top copy was creased by dint of the packaging in which they arrived so would often pick the one underneath.
I often delve down the pile because the top one is usually torn or damaged.
The Guardian pile never seems disturbed to me, but then I don't live in Wales.
I think it's human nature - I know I've done it.
I do it as the top ones are usually creased.
I have found when I used to buy papers with the Tv mag etc in theat they could be missing from the top ones!

You could be right Mam, I even do the same at the fruit counter of the supermarket, I never pick fruit from the front of the display, always from the back, also the same with packaged goods.
LOL @AOG.

As has been said, a lot of it is instinct. I know that when I'm shopping I tend to pick something from the back of the shelf rather than the front.
My LOL was @ AOG's comment about the pile of undisturbed Guardians.
Yes I too do it with fruit and veg and other products, shuffling through to the longest dated items.

I try to be tidy about it though.
I always had my newspapers delivered, when we as a family all lived together, and nobody would dare open it until I had read it, or else! :-)

And days when I was having a lie in, the 4 kids used to fight, to who was going to deliver it to my bedroom.
Lovely memories.

When being 'Master of the Household' meant something eh? :0)
I do this Mikey, nice crisp copy! :0)
You don't know who has touched the top copy. I always delve for my Guardian.
I tend to not take the top copy as well.
