Did Russ Abbott invent the phrase " See you, Jimmy" through his comic Scots character, or did the phrase exist before that?

In 'A Dictionary of Scottish Phrase and Fable' (Ian Crofton, 2012), the author finds no reason to mention Russ Abbott when referring to the phrase: http://tinyurl.com/h8wh2gj That would seem to me to suggest that Abbott simply picked up on an existing phrase.

It existed before that
It's going back some time but I believe I heard the phrase before Russ became famous. But it's difficult to be sure after all this time.
