Did you see the news item at lunchtime on TV? All was revealed then.

Analysing the tooth will have revealed background isotopes, etc. which will have been absorbed during the development of the dog. These have obviously placed the dog as having been born in the York area. Barring flying or rowing itself to Wiltshire it must have walked there.....probably in the company of humans.

I think the newspaper article leaves out much of the explanatory detail but it is fascinating nevertheless.

better question who cares.

I do, when it comes to stuff like this I like to know the tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth.

There's no substitute for filling in the details.

That was an incisive comment, fender...
I wonder how they know the dog was a pet ?

Possibly because
///"It was drinking from the area when it was young, it went on a journey of about 250 miles to the Stonehenge area with people and it ate what the people were eating on this site at Blick Mead.///
Doesn't necessarily make it a pet though, could just have been a hunting dog.
well done wee

yeah the dog tooth should be gummed....
gums - tooth - geddit

Sundry ABers bare their toothless gums, and all looking like Mr Punch and say in unison ' well what is that all about then ? '

you or one carbons dates the carbon ( as carbonate) in the tooth enamel
and this one comes out as 4000BC - mesolithic -
Mesolithic sites are pretty rare in the UK.

I'm not stunned by the discovery but do find it very interesting - this technology has many great applications not just in this field but in forensic and other scientific situations.

The fact the dog travelled with the people is the reason the word 'pet' has been used, as you say it may well have been a domesticated hunting dog but not a roaming wild one as they don't travel that far - have no need to.
// I wonder how they know the dog was a pet ?//

mush if she reads this might be able to explain
I am dont think dogs were ever farmed
so it could be context - archeological context

I wonder how they knew it was an alsatians or thereabouts
presumably you show it to a canine forensic [vetinerary] dentist
and he says - "fascinating, alsatian tooth really - how old did you say?"
