I lived for the first two years of my life in the same road as the hospital (Lordship Road). The hospital closed in 1974 but the site is now occupied by a health centre. I went to St Mary's Primary school also in Lordhip Road (most of my friends went to William Patten in Church Street). Small world.
Your description of the area is very appropriate. I haven't been there for about six months but the last time I visited, despite the chic gentrification of Church Street, overall the area (including Dalston) is indeed an utter khazi.

Well, I live in Islington, and sometimes drive through Dalston.
What's happening to the area is the same thing that happens to all areas that are adjacent to expensive areas. The new money starts coming in, from those who want to live in the areas that have become too expensive. But Dalston has a major problem - rubbish transport links.

As you say NJ small world..my brother was also born there, and asap they then moved out as they had the nous like a lot of the neighbours to see what was on the cards there...I was two when we moved so have no memories of the place !...

When I drove through there to see my ex, I would automatically lock my car door as I got onto the high street.
