Harper Lee dies aged 89.
My favourite book!
Question Author
Peck was awful in the film but
"To Kill a Mockingbird" was one of the outstanding reads of my life. I've yet to get "Go Set a Watchman", but fully intend to read them back to back soon.

RIP Harper Lee.

R I P Nelle, and thanks for a good read.
Great book and I thought the film was fantastic ...
RIP Harper Lee.
Harper Lee erm girl I think

the prose is pretty girlie - [ Dickens wrote to George Eliot to say he thought she was a girl as her portrayal of a woman agony before she killed her babu could not have been written by man ]
one hit wonder apparently

go set a watchman was rightly not printed
and then wrongly was erm printed

other one hit wonders - a tree grows in brooklyn
"Joy in the morning" is apparently no joy to read

Little women
Little men should have had the decentcy to die in the American Civil War

baby

there is no Geo Eliot novel where the heroine kills her babu ( polite term for Hindu teacher )
Weecalf, I have never seen a movie in which Gregory Peck plays other that an excellent part.

Awww. That book was stunning. RIP Harper Lee.
While usually appreciative of Pedant's succinct and concise discourses, I haven't a clue to decipher his posting in this thread.

A review of Harper's 'Go Set a Watchman' finds that it was actually written prior to 'Mockingbird', but portrayed Atticus Finch as a racist and KKK follower. 'Watchman' was modified over the intervening years at the suggestion of her close friend and fellow author Truman Capote (although born in Louisiana, he grew up in the same small town as Lee) with whom she assisted him closely in his book In Cold Blood .

After publication and success of 'Mockingbird' Lee never refurbished 'Watchman' but the rights to the book were sold to Harper Collins which released the book in July 2015 after which it became a best seller.

Just like her friend, Capote, Lee abjured the limelight... seemed almost frightened of fame... she called it "...like being hit over the head and knocked cold". She never wrote another line...

As to Gregory Peck's rendition of Attorney Finch, the Screen Actors Guild solidly disagrees with 'weecalf' (as do I) since Peck was awarded his one and only Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance.
No, DB; I have not see that movie.
Gregory Peck was excellent in the film.
I read it as a teenager, and it had a tremendous impact on me. I read it before I saw the film which also was wonderful, and Gregory Peck was masterful in it. The child actors were excellent too. I believe that it was Robert Duval's first film role (as Boo ).
