Does the PC have to be on in order to use a VOIP phone for landline calls?
I need a new phone and am looking at ones compatable with BT and Skype. I am a Skype user but don't use it very regularly at the moment. And which type(s) or models would you recommend?

It depends. If you connect it to the PC, then yes.

However, there exist base stations for VOIP phones that plug into your router. Then, only the router and base station need to be on, and not your computer.

Thanks fo3nix, that's helpful.
I love my Skype phone. It has its own little transmitter that connects to my router - that is in the loft.

My skype phone is two floors down and works perfectly well, even in the garden. The transmitter can support multiple phones too.

I don't have a landline, but it will work with a normal telephone line as well.

Skype will not dial 999 at the moment - that facility will be available in the future - but I also have a PAYG mobile so that is no concern of mine.
