I love tripe and onions. We had it every week when I was small in the 40s and 50s. My husband didn't like it so we never had it when he was alive. I loved the brown sort, I think it was called reed. I've tried to cook it myself but have never managed to get the delicious taste of my mum's. Some people like it cold but I've never tried that.
Perhaps I need a new thread for this, but on the same lines ---- Does anyone remember cod roe? When I was small, in the '50s, a highlight meal was Mum giving us fried cod roe with bread and butter for tea. I can't find it to buy nowadays and I have tried several times.

When I was first introduced to Indian curry when I lived in the barracks at Paddington the local restaurant in Seymour Street was called "The Star"We nicknamed it The Rat House. In those days you had to pay 50p extra for chicken "off the bone" We just had it on the bone as we were always pretty skint. Those bones were definitely not chicken bones. I have just eaten a home made chicken vindaloo on the bone. I know. Either rat or cat was the considered opinion of what we were given. Pretty tasty all the same.
Remember it is seasonable Jourdain. Any good fish monger would have it in season.

I can get smoked cod's roe from my local fishmonger. I use that for Tarama.
Never seen non smoked cod's roe but love Herring roe that you can buy in tins in Sainsburys. I think they do it in the basics range. Herring roe even better when you gut your own fresh Herring and find it inside. Smashing on toast with loads of butter, pepper and vinegar.

I like tripe, cut up with salt and vinegar as a snack it's ok. Not had any for years but the seam was the nice part for me. When I was small (in the war years) my mother used to buy tripe, pat it dry and batter it and then fry it. I loved it and for years I thought it was some sort of fish.
An old joke: The woman who said to the butcher "I'll have some of the tripe in the window". "Nay Mrs that's my dishcloth", replied the butcher. It probably illustrates what it looks like to the unconverted.
Jourdain, I love fish roe, I like the soft herring roe lightly seasoned and floured then fried with a little oil and white wine. Mr Ask likes cod roe cooked in the oven in vinegar seasoning and a little butter. Don't often see it now and I forget which season it appears, but I would just love to have some right now.
Thanks everybody, off to bed now - but will surge forth with determination in the next few days!!!

That is why I like Tripe a la Caen. With the red wine vinegar and a few other ingredients it tastes like a sea food dish to me which I love.
I can feel a kilo of tripe ready to be ordered first thing tomorrow at my local Turkish deli for Friday supper.
