Travelling up North over the weekend

I'm travelling up to Northumberland this weekend. Have a choice between the M1 and A1. Which one is likely to be the easiest roadworks wise?

Switch to the A19 as soon as possible and go through the tyne tunnel that way you will miss the traffic by the Metro shopping centre which is bound to be horrible on a bank holiday weekend, especially if its raning

You do know the M1 ends long before Northumberland and the A1 goes through it?. Easy choice.
