Hi,we went 4 years ago and pre-booked our safari in the uk but when we got there we found some couples in our party booked in Mombassa and paid half the amount we did so it would be worth checking the web for a kenya based tour op.

My friends and I used the above company. We were staying in the southern palms in mombasa and they were just along the road. We booked it all before we went and while I cannot quite remember the price they were excellent value. They came and collected us at the hotel and took us to a local childrens village we wanted to visit etc. I certainly recommend you get in touch with them. Also it is good to take over little things for the kids you may come across. We took practical things like tshirts, socks pants etc. but also some colouring books and pens to bring them some pleasure. They were so grateful. I loved it and would definetely go back some day. I am not sure if it is mombassa you are going to but if so and you are interested in visiting a childrens village we went to Diani's http://www.dianichildrensvillage.org/support.h tml

we did take books pens etc to the orphanage. Also some t shirts sock pants etc - got just cheapy packs out of premark and they were absolutely over the moon with it. We also visited Wasini island - there were kids there asking for peoples caps sunglasses etc but one couple had taken books and things there. We did a trip to Masai Mara and Also Amboselli and Tsavo east. One was a 3 day and the other was a 2 day trip. I think we paid around £300 each. The masai mara trip involved a flight (it was the 2 day) and the other was a long long journey but things to see all the time. The price included food when you were at the lodges and of course your lodges and also entry to all the parks - great value for money.

I went to Mombassa 3 years ago. We booked our safari from there. I don't know if it was cheaper than the UK but was told before that it was best to leave it till you get there. I do remember one thing that he converted sterling into dollars. I advise travelling to Tsavo East and West, you get one night at each. It was lovely. Our hotel did a free elephant safari for one night also.
