Are you allowed to take prescription medicines (in tablet form) in your hand luggage to the US, or do you need a doctors note?

No problems in hand luggage if they are in tablet form.

US customs will be the problem.

http://thehague.usembassy.gov/u2.s._customs.ht ml#medicine might be useful - it says you must declare them and you do need a copy of the prescription or a doctor's note.
Just take your repeat presciption with you as proof of what you are taking.
