If you could get to Atlanta a few days before departue home, you'd find a nice side trip to Stone Mountain to be enjoyable. Stone Mountain is a State Park just north east of Atlanta. The mountain itself is a large granite rock that just rises up from the forests and crop lands. A tram runs to the top and the view is gorgeous. A bas relief carving in the side of the mountain of several of the Confederate Civil War heroes is quite striking, especially when viewed from the tram at night. There is a small village nearby named, you guessed it, Stone Mountain, with some really good places to try southern cooking. Additionally, the Coca Cola Center in downtown Atlanta is interesting as well as the undergorund. The city proper is about 6 miles to the north of the airport... Welcome to the U.S., by the way!

There aren't that many trains in the US so maybe look at the Amtrak site and see where they go in your area.

Clanad/dzug.Thanks for the 2 posts and the welcome to the USA, we are spending 10days or so at Hemet Ca.,with friends who live there, and where we have been before. The four of us are then flying to Atlanta for a touring week and for the second week there we are on our own. We thought about finishing as I say possibly doing a couple of train journeys either for a great distance or on a tour scale. I would imagine we would take in Stone Mountain, even during the first week with the four of us, but then we will have some distance to cover Sav. and Chas.

Hard @ it, if you're going to be in Hemet, say hello to Mrs. Clanad's favorite Aunt who has lived there many years. I'm sure your hosts will entertain you properly, but insist on the short road trip to Palm Springs, California. The road goes directly by the International headquarters for the Church of Scientology... perhaps you'll see Tom Cruise or some such. But seriously, the most interesting part of the drive is through the pass in the mountains. On the western side, several thousand acres are covered with hundreds and hundreds of wind farms. These are row upon row of huge electricity producing windmills. Quite impressive. A lunch at Citron's in the Viceroy Hotel in Palm Springs would be ideal before returning to Hemet... Enjoy the U.S.A.!

Clanad We are going to Palm Springs to what you "guys" call a "condo" and Citrons will be mentioned, we are also going to the Bahai peninsula north end. Possibly also going to Hearst Castle etc, so will be doing a few miles. Our friends live in California Avenue, Hemet, give me a hint of a name - you never know.
