OK, as I'm a bit of an old-manish type of fella', my choice of pubs might not match yours but you might like to try The Standing Order on George Street. It's a Wetherspoon's pub in a massive old bank. The 'massive' bit is relevant here because I've found that it tends to divide up, with different groups creating different atmospheres in each of the various rooms. (So you should be able to find an area to suit your group).

Cheap drinks, all-day food and the best haggis, neeps and tatties for miles around! What more could you want?

How does "the sports bar" sound? pints, crisps, loads of men, next door to two nightclubs, close to the center of town if you decide to go out, failing any of that just pop into any pub on Rose Street, there must be about 10 or 15 on that street, you're bound to find something you fancy!

Grassmarket has loads of pubs and few bars with live music; Rose St for widest choice but all 'pubs'; Cowgate if you want clubs and busy bars; George St. for chain pub/bars - can be pricey - Prince Williams' fave is alomg there (basement bar - find out when you're here); Frederick St, for Ricks to see and be seen type place; Royal Mile for spot the tourist type old pubs; steer clear of Westport unless you want strip bars; Lothian Rd for the neds.

Look at www.list.co.uk for reviews with eating places as well (like Time Out but better 'cos it covers Edinburgh and Glasgow). Edinbugh Winter Fair runs 27/11 - 04/01/06. See www.edinburgh-festivals.com for info.

And you have to have a deep fried Mars bar and chips after you have had the deep fried jumbo haggis pudding with curry sauce and chips with an Irn Bru to wash it down (and up).

Have a nice time!
