Sending a fax via computer

I've recently bought a new computer with Microsoft Works 2010. As I do a lot of crosswords I'd like to save on postage by submitting them by fax where possible. (It also allows a slightly longer time for submission.) I see that I can send faxes via my computer but, each time I try to do so, I get a message telling me to do it via a modem. My service provder is Virginmedia (by cable) and PC World tell me I don't have a modem in my computer. Virgin were not much help either. It's been suggested that I can install a modem using a plug-in USB but I'm not sure what I should be looking for.
Can anyone help, please?

Thanks ChuckF. As you probably guessed I'm nearly computer illiterate. Will this gadget just plug straight into a USB port without any further need to connect with my Virgin phone line? Because I'm not sure how I would go about accessing my phone line if this is necessary.
You'd plug it into your USB port and connect it to a phone socket just like a normal phone. It will be entirely independent of your virgin cable connection that provides your internet,
Or you could send a fax via the Internet:

Thanks rojash. I'm now going to have to find out how to upload a crossword from a newspaper into this method.
Internet fax service is very easy to use and reliable. Popfax.com is cheap and efficient. Or try free trial. http://www.popfax.com
