I have an ageing computer (20gb hard drive) and have 17gb used but cannot find where. I have checked all folders / prog files for excessive size to no avail.

Is there an easy way to trace this memory use?Simple terms please.

You could try : start > programs > Accessories > windows explorer

Then click on the 'tools' tab at the top of the screen > choose folder options > choose the 'view' tab and see if 'show hidden files or folders' is checked. This might show up stuff which you had not noticed before.

What operating system (OS) are you using?
Open your search window and enter *.tmp  This will search for any temporary files that are clogging up your system.  Alternatively download disktective http://www.freebyte.com/disktective/  Run this app and it will show you where the free space has gone.
Delete all your temporary internet files, this may free lots of space.
