My CD Drive doesnt work and I'm not sure how to fix it. It doesnt respond when I press the open button, no light, nothing. I have tried the help section on Windows but just got bogged down. I tried going into 'add hardware' but this didnt help. Do you have any suggestions as to what may be wrong and how I go about fixing the problem? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Check the power cable going into the CD Drive.  This involves delving inside the computer.  and finding the red/black leads.  Just check its firmly plugged in the back of the CD Drive.

Open 'My Computer' - can you see the CD drive listed?
Did it work before? Have you just installed it?
If the power cable and ribbon cable are connected then it could be your power supply unit that is on it's way out. Open up the computer and swap the power connector to the CD drive with a spare one (if you have one). If it still doesn't work then it's most likely to be the CD drive has died. Hope this helps.

make sure everything is connected properly. then clcik start, right click on my computer, click properties, then hardware, then device manager. if your cd drive is showing....delete its entry. then reboot. windows will automatically restore all your cd drivers on restart.

If this doesnt work, open my computer. right click on your hard drive, then click properties>tools>check now. Tick both options and check them now. This will require a restart. This just check for any missing files on your hard drive, or any files that have been replaced with bogus files....generally sorting everything out. I would advise you do this anyway just to keep your pc in good health.

if there is no light on power up on the front of the drive, and you can't get it open, then chances are it is dead.

The fact that your hard drive works means that it can't be the power supply, as the same 5v and 12v lines are used for all drives. Just get a new one, salvage one from a defunkt pc, or even better buy a dvd or cd-rw drive, which can be had for very little more than the cost of a plain ol' cd.rom these days.

NOTE; before you dump the cdrom, poke a straightened out paper clip into the front eject hole to remove any disc it may have swallowed.
