I'm spending 8 months in France and Austria. If I buy an Iphone here on o2, will I be able to get a sim card from France and Austria and just put that in it to use there? How does it work with the wifi, would that work over there?

hello baremission. best thing to do is buy an unlocked iphone from ebay. the wifi will work anywhere that has an unlocked wireless network. if you buy one from o2 it will be locked which means it is useless abroad unless you use a uk o2 simcard which will cost a small fortune.

so go on ebay and look for an iphone. check the seller has 100% good feedback and refund policy. u can put a pay as you go sim card in to use while you are in the uk and then when you go abroad just buy pay as you go sim cards when you get there.

good luck!

Oooooh thanks very much!
Wifi will work with any wifi source; it's an international standard.

The phone is very different though. As above, the phone is locked to O2's network in the UK. You'll pay huge roaming fees if you use it elsewhere on that sim card.

Here's what I'd do: buy a cheap phone that's unlocked, that you can text and call from. Then buy an iPod Touch. The iPod Touch has all the features of the iPhone, just without the phone stuff.

That way, if your iPod gets nicked, you'll still have a phone to drop back on.

Also, there is a Skype app for iPhone and iPod Touch, and you can use a microphone with the Touch to make free (or very cheap) calls from wifi.
