but how does this work?

I use messenger to speak to my boyfriend in Iraq, its amazing how fast you get each others messages even when you're really far apart.

How do the messages get back and forth so fast? Do they travel up and down some line?

digital radio waves
Radio waves travel at a speed of 186000 miles per second. Internet communication via satellite involves the transfer of digital microwaves. For intercontinental communication, signals are usually "bounced" from satellites in geosynchronous orbits.
