I need to buy a wireless USB adaptor for my DEll Inspiron 531 desktop computer. I have tried to buy over the Dell site but they dont seem to sell the model anymore. When I call the sales line they wont give me any advice on what type to but but pass me on to a line that seems to charge 25 for advice. the only advice I want is what type to buy. I have tried to ask online but it is always the same - they cant help me as my warranty expired in August. I don't want technical advice as such, just to know whether I can buy any sort of wireless adaptor or does it have to be a specific one. Can anyone help?

it's nothing to do with your waranty ... ideally buy the same brand as your router

even better - use wire ... wireless laptop is bad at best ... wireless on a desktop is just impossible to get working well
You need a wireless LAN card, there are loads on the market, try to buy one from a make you recognise like Sweex or Belkin or C Net. When you install them, which is easy, they just go in a spare PCi port inside your desk top. load the software but just load the driver not the utility, which will be the manufacturers own, then use windows to configure your wireless set up. One thing wireless is a lot slower than LAN cable so you wont get the same speed, but it is easier to move about.
By the way Dell are sales company not a help company, once you buy something you are on your own so don't even waste your money phoning them.
