it is perfectly legal to rip a dvd to your computer for your own personal use. if you start either making copies or make it available for download in any way you are then breaking the law.
I personally use magic DVD ripper, but you have to pay for that, I've heard good things about DVDshrink for a free ripper

Dvdshrink is very easy to use and there are lots of tutorials showing how to use it. If used in conjunction with Nero it is a smooth process.
DVD Decrypter is also a useful tool
Have a read through these forums if you have any more questions.

cheers, do you have a reliable link for dvd shrink? seems to be a mix of sites with some wanting to charge even though its a freeware from what i can tell.
I personally use DVDFab and haven't come across any DVD that it won't back up....

I always use aimersoft dvd ripper to rip DVD, I think it's legal as long as you do it without any bussiness purpose. My friends recommend this software to me, it's easy to use and works pretty well, if you need detailed info, here is a guide about how to use it http://www.freedvdripper.net/guides/rip-dvd-co py-dvd-converter-dvd-edit-dvd.html
