xbox 360/ speakers

I,ve just bought a monitor and wanted to connect my xbox 360 and have surround sound through creative 5.1 speakers that I,ve connected through a pc but I can only get sound from the monitors built in speakers, not the 5.1. Is it possible, I have tried all sorts of combinations .
