I have a digital camera with built-in flash,I wish to take close-up pics. of some jewellry, but the flash reflects back and spoils the result. Is there a simple way of overcoming this without going outside to nullify the flash. Thanks!!!

Natural light is by far the easiest way to get good results with macro photography. So going outside (preferably on an overcast day, to avoid bright reflections and dark shadows) is actually your best option. Even simply taking the photos near to a window might be good enough.

Otherwise, you need to diffuse the flash by placing a piece of white cloth (like a piece of handkerchief) over it. (It doesn't have to be cloth. Even an ordinary piece of copy paper, taped over the flash, can often do quite a good job as a diffuser).

Either change the angle, or turn flash off.

Or illuminate it with a different light from somewhere else.

To get more brightness, try turning the ISO setting to the next notch if you can.

If you use a desk lamp or similar, make sure you properly set the white balance, either one of the indoor light settings or manually.

Thanks to you both for some quick and clear replies,I'll give it a go to-morrow!!!
An easy way is to diffuse the flash by covering it with white cloth or tissue paper - you can use different thicknesses until you get the right amount of light without the hard relections and shadows
