They all go over the top in WW1 camp, this is shown alot in the army as the show was so pouplar and whitty (just like the army humor I suppose). The last bit I bet put tears in the eyes of men!
It is a fabulous example of the often observed fact that comedy and tragedy exist, separated only by circumstances.
The subtle and endless undercurrent of the stupidity and futility of any war is masterfully ddelivered in the writing and acting of this last episode - with the inevitability finally embraced with weary resignation by Blackadder, a sense of adventure, fear, and obedience, by the rest.
It did make me cry - and so it damned well should.
One of the most moving moments in TV history. It brings a lump to my throat every time I see it. I remember watching it the first time it was on, and the tears running down my face - and I am an ex-soldier too.
