I tried it in the washing machine. It doesn't work then :-(

But, it should work. The shielding is only designed to cut out microwave frequency radiation. Microwaves run on about 2450 Mhz (according to wikipedia) and phones run on 900 or 1800 (ish)

It's supposed to test the microwave. but I think answer no 2 explains it.
