Testing motherboards

How can you test to see if you have blown your motherboard. My PC went bang and flashed at the PSU. I have changed the PSU and there is still no sign of life. (Before it went bang, my pc would not turn on.Working fine before this.)I built it only 5 weeks ago, it was my first (possibly last) attempt at building a PC)

Almost sounds like a power surge to me. I believe the only way to see if its the mobo is to replace it. You say you already replaced the power suupply so the mobo is the next mostlikely thing to check. Not to make you feel like an idiot or anything but is there a switch on the power supply that you may have missed?

I have checked all switches, plugged into different sockets, changed leads etc, still no joy. I didn't want to buy anything else, already cost more than i wanted to spend. Do you know if it could be the case?? ie power supply to the on/off button. How could i tell if that had something wrong with it?

It could have fried the CPU too.

Make sure that the second PSU your tried was the same power as the original one. If the second one was older and less powerful, it may not have been enough to power all your new components anyway....

The original PSU was 350w the new one is 450w. Seems like i'm gonna have to elimate everything one by one.ie case, motherboard, CPU. God sounds like i'm gonna be building my second PC!! :(

most computers have a little green light inside them, maybe near the battery. Is yours lit? how bout on the back of the case is there one there?

just for giggles you could switch around the power and reset button wires on the motherboard and see if pressing the reset will make it work. thats if you have a reset button.

some motherboards have a bigger plug for the big harness from the power supply, ie: 20 pin on the plug and 24 on the board. is that how yours is ? if so, are you sure yours is plugged in correctly?

thanx everyone. Now working. It was the power lead. I had originally swapped the power lead with a spare one i had. Not realising that the spare one was a duff one and hence the reason it was spare!! Should have thrown it away, i know. All my so called sapre leads are well and truely binned. Cant take the stress anymore, but thank you to everyone that contributed.
