I think that the pressing down on the head in some way primes the arm muscles and gets them ready for a good lifting motion.

They're not lifting with two fingers, they are lifting with two hands each, i.e. eight hands for a short time. If the guy is 16 stone, then each hand needs a brief 14 lb lift, which isn't impossible. I bet they couldn't have lifted and held him up there for ten seconds.
