Treat her to the full monty in her fav hairdressers - or as much of a full monty as £30-£40 will cover.
A gift card for her favourite salon/beauty parlour place?

If my wife's hairdresser is anything to go by,£40 wouldn't get much of anything!
OK, the beauticians then? I pay between £25 and £30 to have my nails done and there are loads of "little" treatments they offer.
The latest book by her favourite author?

A signed edition of her favourite book, (depending on the author - a signed edition could be extortionate - eg Dickens!)

Well, I fit the age group and general description, and I was given a £40 Sainsbury gift card at xmas, "to help with the shopping" - sod that I thought, and being an avid radio listener, I used the voucher to get a super little DAB radio/alarm clock for by the bed. Chuffed to bits.

Thanks for the ideas. I like the book one. I always think that vouchers smell of idleness!
For some things, you cant really wrap them up though. Ie a manicure.
some nice flowers always go down well.
does she like music? maybe a cd?
how about films? dvd's?
i bought my SIL a large bunch of beautiful flowers as a thank you, cost from Amazon about 32 quid with delivery.. the best part is you don't have to go out and buy them, just look on line... delivered door to door
Yes, it's always lovely to get flowers. My sister sent me some as a thank you for hosting Christmas Day, and I was thrilled.
How well do you know her? I'd love flowers or a beauty salon voucher but a book would leave me stone cold.

I'm not sure she needs a ritual balancing or spreaded with butter, and it would annoy me buying such nonsense.
Thanks for all your help.
Does she like Gardening?
If you are going to dismiss peoples' suggestions so rudely then I suggest you don't bother asking.
How about an afternoon tea somewhere?
