for a new one?

I was told by a computer shop it couldn't, or it would be expensive if he did it.

Seems strange these days for just replacing it?

you could solder in new one if your handy with a solder iron, and can dismantle the laptop yourself, iv done it many times with different brands of laptops.
You could forget the faulty socket if others are working and if you need to have a further socket on your laptop then get a USB Hub and plug into a usable port. They are cheap enough. Select something suitable from the following.
