For example in History, at the side there used to be + sign which you clicked and got genealogy and family history. They seem to have disappeared. Or have I missed something?

They are still there. In View All Categories , top right of this page.
You need to click on the red box at the top, not the list at the bottom.
they're still there? If you click on the three bars beside "View All Categories" you get the main list, and the ones with sub-categories have plus signs next to them, and you click on those.

Rather a tedious procedure, but there it is.

what are you using, a PC?
They are there for me but that said the sub categories are dying a slow and lingering death.
sometimes when i click on the + it opens up the sub categories, other times it doesn't ... it seems to have a life of its own

Click 'View all categories' (top right of screen) and they're all there.
I can see the plus signs here. I'm using Chrome. Which browser are you using? What happens if you refresh and reduce screen magnification to around 90%?
this is what I see, Clarion

I don't see they are needed. Most categories (other than the favoured 6 listed at the top) get only a handful of questions, if any, each week, so there seems little point in breaking them down further. I think many sections will die a death under the new layout

I wish we could see them all without faffing about. It occurred to me today that I haven't visited one of my regular haunts for ages - Science. I'd forgotten it was there.

None here either.
Get rid of all sub categories is my preference. Unfortunately they are still there.
Yes I used to look in Science and Beauty (which is now empty) and Film. Never remember now.
But they're there when I switch to Firefox.
I like the 'twitching and bird watching' sub category because I know that anyone looking in there will be interested in what's posted.
Prudie, out of sight, out of mind.
