Yes
There appears to be a lot of it about with Windows 10.

is it the original blue screen of death or a copycat?

The very first time that I met the blue screen I was working late on one of the governments cheapskate computers. I thought that I had killed my PC or maybe even the entire (huge) system.

Thanks guys
It is possible but if you get your initial installation right, keep all your updates current on Windows and all the other drivers you should never see it. Just as a test download drivereasy and see how many of your drivers are out of date. The free version is slow but it gives you good info.
It's the pale blue frowny face of death in W10
Is it? I've been using W10 since I downloaded the beta version to all my machines and have yet to see it.

I haven't seen the new version, and I haven't seen the old version for a long time.

Is the new one legit or is it a data collecting scam?
Data collecting scam? I'm confused now - all the blue screen of death does is inform you there is a problem with the computer and it will reboot
I used to chuckle at my Grandson, he would suddenly appear waving his arms exclaiming loudly 'The blue screen of doom!, help me'.
had a lengthy update couple of days ago..all fine

I don't know what the Windows 10 does hc - is is telling you that there really is a problem or does it actually do something (like fix it ?) I didn't even know that there was a newer version that the original blue screen.

mamy - kids are usually a bit blasé about serious stuff like that.

He is now, this was a few years ago - they all have the latest whizzy gadgets whilst I am still running on steam.
Most blue screen of death problems arose due to bad device driver problems and were not actually Microsoft generated problems. Microsoft however got the blame from disgruntled users. Over the years Microsoft have made massive changes to the operating system starting with HAL (a Hardware Abstraction layer) and  changes to the Graphics Device Interface (GDI). Then after the Windows Error Reporting system was introduced with XP, and Microsoft  launched s test programmes and used lessons learned into subsequent versions of Windows, things got a whole lot better.  Barring genuine hardware failures, most blue screens have become a thing of the past. Most Windows installations now just automatically reboot at a blue screen class error, so if you have had an unexpected reboot of Windows, you may have had a blue screen.
Why do you think it could be a data collecting scam?
I get plenty of BSoDs when I play my high graphic intensity game. No company admits blame, nor can suggest how to solve the blameless issue.
It tells you lots. Which drivers failed to load, what was happening prior to the crash, etc..
You can download programmes that will interpret the .dmp files for you.
Thing is Geezer after years of development the crashes now don't require a whole system restore. In short: They just removed the "fatal" from the crashes by encapsulating processes in a way that allows them to crash without taking the rest of the system with them. Developers and programme writers for such as games and third party apps were the main causes and of course the fact that these apps and games etc, being much smaller volume products were developing and using new drivers and graphics systems before Microsoft could feasibly upgrade every PC in the world using their system. Don't forget that Macs had just as much trouble with fatal crashes before introducing a whole new operating system. Plus Mac did not give assistance if programmes that were not licenced took down a Mac in the the way that Microsoft at least tried to take some responsibility.

hc - much on Facebook is just data farming (I think that is what it is called) and I tend to be suspicious of anything unusual elsewhere on the web. There is so much that I really don't fully understand about technology.
