I want to record audio on my computer, could anyone advise me which is the best free programme to use.

My computer is windows XP and my browser Firefox 26.0.

I have downloaded the 'Freecorder' add-on, but I am experiencing trouble with blank web pages popping up and also adverts, so I would like something a little less troublesome.

'Audacity' works well enough, I couldn't say whether there are any better free audio programmes though.
As Chewn says, windows comes with a Recorder:

'Windows Start>All Programs>Accessories>Sound Recorder'

But if you want to also do some sound editing in addition to recording you could download and install a free Program called Audacity from the following link:

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
I use Audacity and know plenty of other people that are happy with its performance as a free program.

Thank you for all your answers, I found sound recorder and this sounds great, but could anyone tell me where do the recordings go to ie (file) and is there anyway one can put this sound recorder on a menu bar for easy access?

I already have audacity installed thank you.

The Windows Sound Recorder files usually save to the Documents folder, but when you select stop record it will pop-up a save Window and you can select where you want to save to plus specify file-name.

To put the Sound Recorder onto the Start Menu, navigate to the Sound Recorder program in 'Windows Start>All Programs>Accessories' and Right click on 'Sound Recorder', then select 'Pin to Start Menu'

Sorry I have just noticed that one has to connect an input audio recording device such as a microphone.

The type of recording I wish to carry out is any sound coming out of my computers speakers, Freecorder allows one to do this, but attaches adverts etc.
