What are you trying to achieve? Does your PC have any tv connectors?

Oh wants to plug in an external hard drive with films...pc is upstairs...he wants to watch through big telly downstairs....have usb on bedroom telly but not the larger one downstairs

I can source the telly to read the scart plug so was wondering if I get a scart that has usb receptor on the other end he could plug in either stick or external hard drive ?
Almost certainly not, USB is for data and Scart is audio/video, in any case the TV wouldn't know what to do with the data even if you could plug it in as it needs to be a smart tv to play movies from a hard drive.
I agree. You can't just connect an external hard drive to a tv and expect it to play.
I have a smart blu ray player (about £40) and that will play films on my tv via my external hard drive.

You may be able to connect your pc or laptop to your tv and use the tv as a monitor but you need to be sure all the equipment is capable of that. If your computer and tv both have HDMI connections it is easy peasy.

My new laptop that Santa is bringing Will do the job I think !

Thanks for the replies....my pc has been repaired now ....apparently a virus !
Hopefully. Depends on your tv, too :D

To clarify, your external hard drive has a film saved in .mp4 (for example). It plays on your pc because your computer has a program that can recognise it and play it and the appropriate codex. If the film is played in a format the pc doesn't recognise it will not play.

Your tv doesn't have the programs or the codex so it can't play it. Your tv can be used a monitor, though, but just like your pc monitor it needs the 'brain' to read the information and display it.

Your new laptop will need to be able to display on a second monitor (the tv screen) and the tv and laptop must be able to communicate to send and receive the information and display it properly.
