What is a wireless router?

Can somebody please expalin what a wireless router is?

your internet comes to your computer from a cable that plugs into your computer? that cable is plugged into a router instead and then a second cable either runs to your cable or there is an antenna in the router that sends a signal to any wireless computers (computers with wireless network cards installed) so that u can use the compter without it being plugged directly into the broadband connection, (i.e. - a laptop that u can work anywhere in the house without it having a broadband cable plugged into it)

Best to imagine it as a box that u plug your internet connection into that has lots of holes in it so that u can plug upto 4 other computers into it using proper cables, or u can have several wireless computers connected to it using a wireless radiowave that transmits the broadband invisibally through the air up to a maximum of 300feet away. All using the same one broadband connection at the same time!

Only useful if u a) have more than one computer at home that u want to connect to the internet at the same time, or b) u have a computer like a laptop that u want to move around the house or garden with and not trail a long cable from your phone line/set top box etc.
