In the last few days my PC has been freezing, I can move the curser around without a problem but mouse click functions dont work, I can do cont+alt+delete, that takes me back to my desk top but with no icons on there, just my wallpaper, The only thing I can do from that point is a re-boot.

Im running WindowsXP, I dont think it is internet related as ive tried switching browsers but it makes no difference.

Any ideas

Have you tried running a full system scan ?
I have that problem and press control/escape. That seems to work.
Have you ever made a system restore point, if so you can go back to that, don't ask me how, OH always deals with my problems and he isn't in at present. Just a thought.
usb mouse? Try unplugging it and putting it back in again. Also, try a different usb port. Restart your pc with the usb mouse disconnected and once windows re-loads plug the usb mouse back in again. Windows sometimes has an annoying habit of forgetting where the drivers are.

This only applies to a usb mouse.

SlackAlice, It is a USB mouse, I will try what you suggest, thanks.

Furrypussycat, I do have restore points but I will try other options before I do a restore.
Question Author
tried that and no difference, now for a restore.
Did you not see my answer, ratter? Did you try it?
Question Author
Sorry Tilly, Yes I did try it but nothing happened, I tried a restore but it froze halfway through the restore, Im wondering if it may be a hardware issue now :-(
Question Author
I am now aware that this problem also occurs when the PC is idle, The CPU is running at virtually zero when frozen which I would imagine it to indicate that nothing else is running in the background and will only fluctuate to about 3% if I move the cursor around.
Do you have a lot of stuff stored on your computer? Could also be a memory problem.
Question Author
Society, I have 3 gig ram and about 62 gig available space on each of three hard drives.
Try the Mouse in another pc to eliminate a fault with it.

Thanks methyl, I will try what you suggest, I have 3 gig ram so I don't think it is a memory promblem.

The only currently running process is "System idle Process and is at "99" I have shut everything else down and cleared all my start up progs.

I tried a different mouse and still had the same problem, However I think the issue has improved slightly.

Question Author
ok, now my PC appears to be quite happy now as long as it is being used, however if I leave it unattended for a short while it freezes again, confusing.

I dont know if its software or hardware!
