Can I block unwanted calls on a smartphone

I've been getting a flood of calls from companies about PPI Insurance claims. I can only weed out calls with a live voice talking but most are just a recorded message & I don't know if I'll end up charged something just for answering the call.
I've got an iPhone & wondered if I can block the problem numbers or have I got to go through my service provider (O2).
0843 & 029 prefixes have been the worst offenders!

Hi, I use TPS, you can register landline and mobiles, they don't catch all calls but we get a lot less calls that we used to.

I registered with the TPS and it DID reduce the amount of calls. It esout 6 weeks to work fully and joining TPS takes a few seconds on the 'net.

These unwanted calls are a complete pain in the arse !
