Laptop drops internet connection when using battery

I bought a new D-link router. My laptop drops the internet connection when I use the battery. The laptop works fine while plugged into the wall. My old, less expensive D-link router dropped the connection every once in a while, but the new router will not stay connected unless I plug the laptop into the wall. Does anyone know why?
