What is meant when mobile phone.....

I'm looking for a mobile for OH's birthday and when looking for one I see that some are described as "unlocked" what does this actually mean? I just want to buy the phone to replace his old one, and he already uses T-mobile PAYG, so will carry on using the same sim card. Thanks for any help.

An "unlocked" phone isn't tied to any network, this'll explain it..

Unlocked phones can support any carrier to it,but it will cost fortune.. For that you can get a new mobile and get it unlocked from any commercial vendors online like http://www.superunlockcodes.com .. He can later use tmobile ...once unlocked you can use any carrier to it...
