I have a modem connected to my only pc. The  modem, which runs a bt broadband 2.3mbps line, is on this pc.

I've just bought a laptop and want to connect this to my broadband connection so both pc's share the same connection......trouble is what do I need? I have no clue in this field.

If somebody could help point me in the right direction on what I will need for my pc, laptop etc etc that would be brilliant.

Thank you for your help.

You need to purchase a wireless router. Netgear and Linksys are good makes

If your laptop is new, it will probably have built in wireless capability. Your PC will need to have a network interface, but if it is reasonably new, then it will have one built in.

The procedure is fairly straight forward, connect the router to your PC with the supplied cable, logon to the router using your web browser as per the instructions, e.g http://192.168.1.1, transfer your broadband user name and password to the router, configure the wireless settings, I recommend that you use encryption, unless you want your neighbours using your connection.

Generate an encryption key, write it down and transfer this to your laptop, so it can connect to the wireless network.

If all you want to do is share the broadband connection in close proximity to the base pc, then all you will need is a network cable to connect the laptop to the pc. Then run the " Home Network Wizard" (assuming that you have XP) on the pc & then on the laptop and that should work.
You could pop down to pc world for some free help! But do not buy from them. They will rip you off!
with the help of various ABERs, I recently set up a wireless connection fo 2 laptops, but it was not easy. The problem I was having was with security settings, but once I understood how to do it on the first laptop, the second one was easy.If your laptop has built in wireless capabilities, all you will need is the router, but if your laptop does not have this, you will also need a wirless card, and wireless USB adaptor. I used 128 bit WEP encryption and MAC address security, which I hav ebben informed should be adequate.Remember, if you use WEP encryption, when you choose your code for the router it has spaces or dashes between the alphanumeric codes you choose, e,g A1 2B 3C etc, but when you enter the same code into your laptop security, it does not need the spaces, e.g A1B23C etc.It took me nearly 3 days, and about 25 router resets to work this out. Most annoying as none of this was mentioned in the 115 pager router manual.Good luck!
