Is there such a thing as a simple mobile phone? I've had a mobile for several years but hardly ever use it because it's so complex I can't be bothered with it. The instruction book has about 200 pages with references I don't understand and don't wish to use.

I'd like one to simply make and receive phone calls, send and receive text messages, and possibly able to include a picture. I've no wish to go round holding one to my ear all day looking as though I have ear-ache!

Suggestions welcome.

I got one for my son, for Christmas. It's a bog standard phone, which allows him to text (mainly his nan and cousins) and also has picture messaging.
It's a nice little phone, and if a ten year old can pick it up within 5 minutes, I don't think you'll have a problem!

I got one from Tesco a while back - like you all I needed was phone and text, no fancy extras.
Go to Carphone Warehouse and ask for a Nokia, they take pictures, have largeish numbers, easy to use and see, around £25 for a pay as you go or you can get them on contract. My old one was a 6300, they still look similar to this one.

I do agree with Smurf, though... you can't go wrong with a Nokia! :-)

Many thanks for these suggestions - I'll do some exploring. Phone calls, emails and picture messaging would be enough for me. I've seen advert pictures for so-called ipads. Does anyone know if they are simple to use, or perhaps more complicated?
Ipads are top of the range, they give you internet access, gaming, all sorts. Not at all what you were describing.

You said "texts" in your OP - you now say emails which means you want internet access?
Coldicote, I too like a simple phone. I have a samsung D600, and I wore out one so got another a week ago on ebay in good condition. It is easy to use for phone calls, texts and camera (or video if you want to). It does also have things like alarm, voice recorder and even a link to internet if you want it, which I dont.

Fair comment boxtops. Yes, I should have said emails. Am I to understand that text messages can be sent without internet access?
Coldicote, texts can be sent without internet access, e-mails cannot!
@Coldicote - iPads are indeed more geared towards top of the range. I too would go with a Nokia (almost all these days will have internet access, to allow you to send those emails and texts) as I find them the most user friendly. Another thing to consider is whether or not you want a touchscreen...they can be fiddly to get used to.

I would second the recommendation for going into Carphone Warehouse as you're more likely to get objective advice there. If you decide you want a Nokia XXXX after going there, you can always check out prices in other shops eg Vodafone before buying. I used to work in mobile distribution so I know it can be a minefield but don't be swayed by salespeople and their convincing you that you want a smartphone - you don't.

Many thanks everyone. I'll probably start looking locally where we have a Tesco and Argos, though Carphone Warehouse also looks interesting.
