I am using a Sony Vaio laptop which has a little sticker telling me it is Vista capable
While I am perfectly happy with XP am wondering when I will have to upgrade to Vista as XP is some years old now.
Or would it be possible to download Windows 7 into it?
I find I do prefer XP..so would prefer to stick with it until I will have no choice but to upgrade.

Don't even try Vista.
It has got to be the worst abomination of an OS ever devised.
"While I am perfectly happy with XP"

Stick with it then. if your computer has XP on it then it's a few years old so save the money you'd spend on windows 7 and put it towards buying a newer laptop when that one need replacing that will have windows 7 on it from new.
agree nightmare i have changed to windows 7 so much better than cr@ppy vista!
Why the critisism of Vista?

We have two desktop PCs next to each other in our house for all the family to use.

One runs Vista the other runs W7.

I can use either depending on who is on the other one, and when I am using Vista it is hardly any different from using W7.

I bet most users would hardly notice a difference if you sat them down in front of Vista and said it was W7.

I think some people say "Vista is crap" because everybody else says it.
Don't. It can be very problematical.
If you're happy with XP .. stay with it for now.
It will be a long time befor it is dead. Just like what happened with Win98.

Never. I am still running Windows 2000 and Windows 98 here with no problems. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Blimey ... Win98 still about then! SE model, I hope .. with the luxury of USB!!
Yes SE. I would struggle without USB.
VHG...

To be fair here, you are an advanced user. being honest how much time do you think it would get you to make a default install of Vista usable compared to Win7?

I acknowledge they are essentially the same under the skin, but where do you draw the line between a service pack and a new OS?.... I expect the answer to that is lead by finance and (probably more so in this case) marketing.
Blimey SB!!

Well, I can see your point, I guess you are pretty much virus and malware safe then. there's not likely to be much about still for that!

Thanks everyone..will stick with my XP.
Xp and Windows 7 use a lot less system resources than Windows Vista giving you more memory to use on your other programs, apps, films games ect
"I think some people say "Vista is crap" because everybody else says it. "

That may well be the case, but having run Vista on a machine that was specially built to be Vista compatible, and then wiped it and installed Win7, the reason that I say "Vista is crap", is quite simply that Vista a crap.

Most of my clients who bought the odd Vista machine decided to delay the roll-out within their organisations, and "downgrade" the new machines to XP. Most of them are now happily rolling out Windows 7.
This has been the subject of law suits in the past when it stated it was capable of running Vista but unfortunately it really meant that but when installed it only ran on the basic features and was very disappointing I agree with Chuck save your money and invest in a new unit that will do the job.
