I want to buy a Domain Name for the purpose of hosting the website myself but not sure what to look for or do. Some Registrars host for you but I just want the name. Also, my ip address is dynamic and varies now and again so need some sort of ddns. Thanks

If you just want to register a domain name, try http://www.123-reg.co.uk I have used them for the past 5 years or so and have had no problem with them at all
I use http://www.getdotted.co.uk for domains, they will also host the domain for free if it purchased from them (there are conditions so check them first)

I would not suggest that you try and host it your self, you would be using your upstream internet connection which is far far slower than your downstream connection so you'd end up with a really slow website!
dyndns will help with the dynamic IP stuff.

But managing your own website (properly) is hard. Pay someone to do it.

I also use 123-reg.co.uk to register domains.

One decent cheap host is web-mania.com. 30/year.
I use Low Cost Names. www.lcn.biz

Just bought a ".org.uk" from http://www.cheapdomainnames.co.uk/ for 2.74 per year and signed up with http://www.zoneedit.co.uk/ to manage the DNS. My Edimax router is supposed to be able to track any IP address changes to ZoneEdit. Changed my Nameservers and waiting for Nominet to see if it all works. Thanks guys, for the info.
